J&J Custom Meats chosen for Small Business of the Month Award

AMES, Iowa – America’s SBDC Iowa (SBDC) is pleased to announce that J&J Custom Meats, of Whittemore, is the winner of the organization’s statewide September Small Business of the Month Award.

In December 2019, Joe and JoAnn Harren, of Whittemore, started a meat locker with no prior meat locker experience, providing meat processing services for beef, pork, and venison, as well as retail sales of beef sticks, jerky, and other meat. The services they provide have been vital to their community during COVID-19, keeping the meat supply chain moving in their area.

They received help from Maureen Elbert and the team at Kossuth/Palo Alto County Economic Development Corporation, who connected the Harrens to many resources, one being Michael Wampler, Regional Director of the Northwest Iowa Small Business Development Center.

“Working with the SBDC was great,” Joe says. “It was a free and convenient tool that really helped us put together a plan. The banks were really impressed with the financial projections and it helped us to easily figure out if our project had any chance of success.”

“What impresses me most about the Harrens is that they were always willing to talk to anyone who might be able to provide guidance. They took every opportunity to learn from as many people as possible,” says Michael Wampler.
