ISURF director & Office of Innovation Commercialization Patrick Klepcyk

AMES, IOWA (March 22, 2024) – Iowa State University Research Foundation Inc. (ISURF) was tied for the 63rd place on the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) “2023 Top 100 Worldwide Universities Granted United States Utility Patents List.” Previously ranked 88th in 2022, ISURF is proud of this improvement.

“While this list is only a snapshot of the success we measure with our teams at the Office of Innovation Commercialization, we are ecstatic to see our name among other prestigious university programs,” Patrick Klepcyk, Director of the Office of Innovation Commercialization (OIC) and President of ISURF.

The top 100 list is compiled using data from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Iowa State University’s (ISU) place is determined by the number of U.S. utility patents granted in the 2023 calendar year. In 2023, ISU had 49 patents, an increase of 25 percent from 2022.

ISURF is a non-profit foundation that was established in 1938 to own and manage the collection of intellectual property that arises from the research enterprise at ISU and the Ames National Lab.  ISU’s OIC, comprised of ISURF and the Office of Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer, evaluates and develops intellectual property strategies for technology emerging from the research and executes partnerships for their commercial development with companies.

The NAI comprises the top 100 list yearly to celebrate National Inventors Day. The recognition is intended to celebrate the importance of research and innovation taking place at academic institutions.
