Iowa State Economic Development is pleased to announce that Lisa Shimkat, State Director of America’s SBDC, Iowa has been named a 2023 Woman of Influence by the Des Moines Business Record.

This award celebrates the hard work of Central Iowa women who have gone above and beyond to make a difference. Shimkat is one of 8 awardees who were nominated and selected. The Des Moines Business Record will honor all of the women who won this award in person at an event on August 3. Along with this event, profiles of the honorees will be published to the July 21 edition of the Business Record.

Shimkat has been the State Director of America’s SBDC Iowa since 2014. She oversees the organization’s 15 centers across the state that provide business counseling for entrepreneurs in all areas of starting, operating and expanding a business. Shimkat has an MBA from Iowa State University, is a Certified Business Advisor (CBA®) from University of Toledo and has also obtained Economic Development Finance Professional (EDFP) certification through the National Development Council. She served on the Securities and Exchange Commission Advisory Committee on Small and Emerging Companies through 2017. She is currently the Vice Chair of the ASBDC Board of Directors, is a member on the Fort Dodge School Board, the Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) board, the Vice Chair of the ASBDC Board of Directors and has served on numerous other boards and commissions.

“Lisa has been an advocate for small businesses in Iowa for many years. Additionally, she has elevated the work of Iowa’s Small Business Development network to national heights and is to be commended. Iowa is often pointed to as a model for small business programming nationally. We are lucky to have her working on behalf of Iowans and her impact is evident in the economic impact numbers the Iowa SBDC reports on annually,” said Interim Vice President for Economic Development and Industry Relations, David Spalding.
