Sukup Manufacturing internship program offers early access to ISU talent pipeline
At Sukup Manufacturing, internships are more than just summer jobs—they’re launchpads for future careers in engineering, manufacturing, and agribusiness. Since its inception in 2017, the program has provided students with hands-on experience in product design, manufacturing processes, and supply chain management, helping to build the next generation of agricultural innovators.
Each year, between 15 and 22 interns gain exposure to the inner workings of a global ag-tech leader while working at Sukup’s headquarters in Sheffield, Iowa. Meanwhile, the company’s Ames-based ISU Research Park facility allows students to continue working year-round while finishing school, extending their experience beyond a single summer.
Building Hands-On Experience in Manufacturing and Innovation
“For many students, Sukup is a household name in agriculture, but they may not fully understand the breadth of what we do,” says Emily Schmitt, Chief Administration Officer and General Counsel. “We want to change that by immersing interns in our business—designing products, working in manufacturing, and seeing firsthand how we innovate.”
Rather than working on hypothetical projects, Sukup interns contribute to real-world challenges that shape the future of agricultural technology. From fan blade design and testing to electrical systems development and process automation, their work has a direct impact on product innovation and operational efficiency.
“Sukup is committed to giving interns more than just a resume boost,” says Renee Hansen , External Relations Manager. “They leave with industry knowledge, technical skills, and real contributions they can point to.”
This focus on meaningful, hands-on learning ensures that students aren’t just observing but actively participating, preparing them for careers in agriculture, engineering, and manufacturing.
A Strong Talent Pipeline for Sukup and Iowa Agriculture
Sukup’s internship program started in 2017 launched by the 3rd generation of the Sukup family at the ISU Career Fair and the organization's first intern is still an employee today! The internship program has proven to be a key driver of talent development within the company, with many interns transitioning into full-time roles.
“We have a strong intern-to-employee conversion rate, which speaks to the quality of the program,” Hansen says. “The ability to work at our ISU Research Park office while finishing school helps us retain top talent and integrate them into our team before they even graduate.”
Sukup primarily recruits from Iowa State University, University of Iowa and the University of Northern Iowa, , offering students the opportunity to gain experience with an industry leader while staying close to home.
Interns also receive professional development and career guidance through Sukup’s structured internship programming, which includes:
- Leadership training and self-reflection workshops
- Financial planning and 401(k) education
- Mentorship and networking opportunities with Sukup executives
Expanding the Internship Program for the Future
With Sukup’s expansion over the last six years at ISU Research Park, the company is broadening its internship program beyond traditional engineering and manufacturing roles. New opportunities in supply chain, accounting, legal, and marketing are allowing students from a variety of backgrounds to engage with the company.
“We’re growing in every direction, and we want to create more pathways for students across multiple disciplines,” Schmitt says. “Whether they stay with us or take their skills elsewhere, our goal is to prepare them for the future—and build the next generation of ag leaders.”
By investing in internship opportunities and long-term career development, Sukup Manufacturing is cultivating the future of agricultural innovation—one student at a time.
