AMES, Iowa – Iowa State University ranks No. 83 in the world in the number of patents granted in the United States last year, according to a list released this week by the National Academy of Inventors and Intellectual Property Owners Association.

The report is based on data obtained from the United States Patent and Trademark Office and highlights the role patents play in university research and innovation.

The Iowa State University Research Foundation was granted 32 patents in 2017.

“Iowa State has a long history of successful technology transfer, from enabling data to be transmitted by fax machines, to technologies that contribute to feeding the world daily,” said Lisa Lorenzen, executive director of the ISU Research Foundation and director of the Office of Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer. “Being among the top 100 worldwide universities granted U.S. utility patents is a testament to the great research being conducted and Iowa State’s commitment to making a difference in the lives of Iowans and people everwhere.”

Iowa State, the only Iowa school on the list, is tied for 83rd with Texas A&M University, College Station; and Kyungpook National University, Daegu, South Korea. Iowa State was last ranked at 86th in 2013.
