AMES, Iowa – Iowa State University ranks No. 69 in the world in the number of patents granted in the United States last year, according to a list released June 4 by the National Academy of Inventors and Intellectual Property Owners Association.

The report is based on data obtained from the United States Patent and Trademark Office and highlights the role patents play in university research and innovation.

The Iowa State University Research Foundation was granted 34 patents in 2018.

“This is about Iowa State researchers and inventors, the great work they do and the commitment they have to improving lives around the world. Without them, there would be no patents,” said Lisa Lorenzen, president of the ISU Research Foundation and director of the Office of Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer.

Iowa State is tied for 69th with Florida State University and Wake Forest. Iowa State was ranked No. 83 in last year’s ranking, and prior to that was ranked at 86th in 2013.
